Dog Crate Size Calculator: What Size Crate Does My Dog Need?
By the Pets Locally team
Updated 2026
Crates are sold by length in inches, but a crate is only the right size if your dog can stand up without ducking, turn around and lie down fully stretched. This calculator takes two measurements and matches you to the correct standard crate size, with a sensible amount of room added. The most common mistake is buying by breed name alone: two Labradors can need different crates.
What size crate does my dog need?
Nose to the base of the tail, not the tip.
Floor to the top of the head while sitting, ears up.
How this works: we add roughly 10 cm to your dog's length and about 8 cm above its sitting height, then pick the smallest standard crate that clears both. That extra room is what lets a dog stretch out and stand comfortably, which is the legal and welfare standard in the UK. If your dog measures between two sizes, we round up. For a puppy, measure the estimated adult size instead and buy that crate with a divider, so you are not buying twice.
